If you are committed this year to making a difference with your spring cleaning, don’t let the big stuff stop you. So often, deep cleaning habits this time of year stop at scrubbing baseboards and windows. Instead, look at ridding your home of unwanted items that are cluttering valuable living and storage space.
True cleaning out can be overwhelming, so take it one room at a time. Before pulling out the dust cloth, scrub brush and vacuum, survey the room and consider what can go, from a basket in the corner to a chair that is never used. Set aside time, either before or after actually cleaning the room, to go through cabinets and drawers. Removing the things you don’t need frees up space to store the things you do.
Storage spaces, such as basements and garages, are the biggest projects for cleaning and organizing, so don’t expect to complete them in a day. Break up the job into sections and complete one before moving on to the next. Stick to the rule of touching each item only once, either giving it a place or moving it to the trash/give-away pile.
Speaking of trash, don’t let concern about getting yours hauled away stop you from getting organized. Most trash and refuse companies allow you to put out some extra trash bags for little or no fee.
What about that old chair that never gets used? Are you finally ready to get the old mattress and box spring out of your basement? For most trash collection companies, a bulk item is anything that won’t fit into a large trash can. Bulk items, from your child’s college sofa to old appliances, generally are not a problem if you call your collector ahead of time.
At Sunburst Environmental, residential trash collection can be arranged to fit your disposal needs, and most bulk items can be picked up with 24 hours’ notice and an extra charge.
