Don’t wait on repairs to your septic system
Carefully maintained septic systems will generally give you many years of service, but even the most meticulous homeowner will find their system in need of attention. Aside from annual or semi-annual pumping of the tanks, septic leachfields can need repair to keep the system running at its best for as long as possible.
If you notice backup or gurgling in shower or sink drains, or an odor in your yard, there’s a good possibility that your system is failing and needs attention. Keep in mind, a failed leachfield is normal, and it can be addressed without replacing your entire septic system.
The key is addressing the issue quickly. Your problem may be a clog due to solids entering the leachfield. A simple screen can be installed that prevents this from happening. If your leachfield has become overtaxed due to greywater—kitchen sink and laundry water which makes up as much as 60 percent of the water carried by a septic system—a solution may be to divert some of this greywater to other areas of your yard.
Sometimes a leachfield can be modified or extended to lessen the load on a septic system. This is especially useful if your system is failing because it is undersized.
Even a simple leak in your system can cause failure of the system, so addressing concerns quickly can save you time and possibly expensive repairs or replacement.
