You know they are coming, with the heavy rain, high wind and potentially damaging hail. You can’t stop the spring and summer storms, but you can be prepared for them and hopefully minimize the damage they can cause.
Anticipate heavy spring and summer rain by keeping drains and window wells clear of debris. While we can’t stop heavy rain from overwhelming culverts and storm drains, we can keep that water draining away as quickly as possible by maintaining our property and street gutters.
Anticipate high wind by securing loose roof shingles and siding. High wind does its greatest damage when it catches a loose corner and proceeds to pull entire sections of roofing or siding from your home. Making timely repairs is your best defense against extensive damage when summer storms bring high wind.
Check trees on your property for damaged limbs and dead branches that could become projectiles during wind storms. Keeping trees pruned and removing branches that hang over or near your home also can help protect your siding, windows and roof by reducing the likelihood of flying debris.
Spring and summer storms often bring hail of varying sizes. A well-maintained home can weather small hail fairly well, but when hail starts approaching marble size, you must anticipate some damage to your siding, roof and possibly windows. Check your home carefully after a hail storm and hire a professional if you suspect damage. Hail damaged roof shingles or cracked siding and window frames can allow moisture to penetrate under-layers and cause ceiling and wall damage that can be costly to repair.
